Investigation 11/17: Use Of Music In Film

The use of music within film plays a critical role when working to create the vision set out by the production team. Proper use of music can enhance and determine the way the film is perceived by audiences. On the contrary, improper use of music can disrupt the viewing experience of the film as well as establish an undesired mood for the film.

Tone And Mood Determined By Music

While there are multiple different concepts within film that can determine and contribute to tone and mood, the use of music is one concept that contributes on a much larger scale. With music being present over the course of the majority of a film, it can likely impacts the tone and mood the most out of any other concepts. The choice in music can completely adjust the tone and mood of what is being shown on screen. This video created by YouTube user shelley craig shows a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean with different music layer over top of it. The original score emanates a very jubilant feeling, demonstrating the overall feeling that was intended for the film. Each of the other types of music placed over the footage alter this intending feeling, creating an entirely different feeling.

Establishment Caused By Music

A common use case for music is to establish an idea within the film. White is is possible to establish an idea using just visuals, music can help to enhance the visuals which can further drive the point forward. An example of score working alongside visuals to establish an idea would be in the movie Back To The Future. With Back To The Future focusing on the idea of time travel, it was important for the filmmakers to establish each time period that the movie takes place in. The beginning of the movie is set during the year 1985. During these scenes, 80's style visuals are paired alongside the 1985 song The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News. This choice of song helps to enhance both the visuals and idea of the movie being set in 1985. Later in the film, after Marty travels back to the year 1955, both the visuals and music change to reflect the change in time. This time the accompanying song is Mr. Sandman which was released during the year 1954. Both of these examples show how the choice of music helps establish the film's idea of traveling to different time periods, and how this concept can be used withing other films.

Investigation 3/1: The Tools Of Camera Stability

One of the most important aspects of cinematography that goes commonly unnoticed is having the camera steady. Even a slight amount of movement within a shot can pull the audience away from the film, so it is important to attempt to have shots. There are multiple different ways that you can use to stabilize your camera, some of which are more effective than others. Tripod Using a tripod is the easiest way to stabilize the camera while filming. By having three points of contact with the ground, a tripod keeps the camera extremely stable. The camera would likely only move due to very large movements on the ground or strong winds. The one downside to using a tripod is that it has to remain stationary. If the required shot involves moving around, a tripod can likely not be used. Overall, the tripod is the easiest, simplest, and cheapest way to keep your camera steady. End of MP 1 Blog Post

After now reaching the end of the first marking period of the 2019-2020 school year, I am able to reflect back upon the work that I have completed so far. Intention Definition & Exploration Of Ideas Having no prior experience in any particular area of film, I set out to choose a topic to focus on that would allow me to help narrow down my focus. The area I chose to focus on was documentary and mockumentary styled film making. I made this choice with the intention to be able to explore both formal and less formal ideas while also not relying on having to create an entire original idea by myself. The topic of my film (The Game) was chosen because of my familiarity and pre-existing personal opinions about it. Planning Planning an entire production entirely by myself was a change of pace in comparison to how I worked in previous years. I began the planning process by typing out all of my thoughts in order to help establish what I am trying to do. Once I developed an idea for th...

Investigation 12/20: Digital Aging/De-Aging

Over the past couple years the technique of Digital Aging/De-Aging has begun to show up in a growing number of films and TV shows. From making an actor look younger like they used to, aging an actor up to what they might look like, and even bringing actors back from the dead, digital aging and de-aging has changed a lot about how actors can look. With the technology only now reaching a usable form, filmmakers, studios, and actors now face the question of it's use in filmmaking today. Why Digital Age/De-Age? Using digital aging and de-aging of actors can lead to multiple different filmmaking techniques that wouldn't be as possible without it. One example of this is that by digitally aging and de-aging actors the filmmaker is given more freedom as to how much of a characters life they want to portray. While different actors could take the main actors place to show aging, digital aging and de-aging can permit a single actor to look whatever age the script desires. This also create...
