Year End Summary Blog Post

With this school year coming to its end, I can now look back on my time in digital portfolio and reflect on what I thought about the course. My Favorite Part Of This Year I feel that the thing I most enjoyed about being in Digital Portfolio this year was having the freedom to investigate whatever I felt interested in. During my time in Film I and Film II, it was interesting to learn the foundations of filmmaking and everything that goes into making a film. But by the end of Film II, I had wanted to be able to do things all on my own, which Digital Portfolio provided for me. Doing research into mockumentaries, writing a film by myself, and creating a shot list, prop list, and schedule was enjoyable as it taught me how to personally do things myself while also giving me to do the freedom that I desired. What I've Learned The Most About I feel that the one thing that I've learned the most about during this year is working with and managing other people. In order to complete the fi

Investigation 5/17: Vlogging

Vlogging is a relatively new style of filmmaking that shows the events of a story from the point of view of one person or a small group of people. Vlogs typically range in quality and complexity, with some having exceptional production quality and others being a simple as someone speaking to their phone camera. While I have no personal interest in creating a vlogs, I wanted to understand what its like to tell a story through a vlog and what composes a good vlog. First Person Filmmaking Vlogs are meant to tell a story through the point of view of the filmmaker. Most stories are usually told through the perspective of an outsider looking in. Star Wars  is an example of this, with the audience watching the events of the story unfold in front of them. Vlogs however, tell their stories exclusively from what the creator experiences. The audience only gets to see what the filmmaker sees. This creates a more personal story told only through the genuine events seen by the filmmaker. While the s

Investigation 5/10: My Brief Introduction To After Effects

Learning to use After Effects is something that I always planned on eventually doing. I still do intend on learning everything I would need to know about After Effects, but I have already experienced a brief introduction to using after effects. Background The reason that I started using After Effects was to create a meme. The meme that I wished to create my own interpretation of the video "Patrick on a seahorse listening to fly me to the moon". The original video is a modified version of the ending credit sequence of the anime  Neon Genesis Evangelion  in which the character Patrick Star of the children's television show Spongebob Squarepants  rides atop of a seahorse while the song Fly Me To The Moon  (originally sung by Frank Sinatra) plays in the background. After coming across this meme, I felt that I wanted to create my own version of it using a video that had previously been recorded. The problem that I encountered however, was that the video was not recorded on

Investigation 5/3: Ultra Key

Ultra Key, also known as Chroma Key or green/blue screening is the process of removing the background or subject within a video by removing a specified solid color during post-production. This is a useful tool for any filmmaker, allowing you to more easily change the setting of your film. The following describes my experience learning to use Ultra Key and my thoughts about it. Lighting Your Green Screen In order to have the best results with Ultra Key, you need to make sure that your green screen is properly lit in the beginning. By properly lighting your green screen, you are making sure that the color of the green screen appears consistent throughout the entire frame. Improper lighting of your green screen can make it more difficult for Ultra Key to remove the background from your subject. It is also important to note that the lighting used for your subject should not be the same lighting used for your green screen. Both your subject and green screen should be lit with their own
